I remember when Toyota ran the Celica commerical: "Looks Fast" was the slogan

The one with the car parked and the dog running into the back of it...that was funny. Now the Celica is discontinued as well. While Honda has the Civic Si as a "sporty" car, and Toyota has the Scion TC...there are no true japanese sports cars under $50k. They are all bloated and too "luxurious" for me to call them sports cars (ie: G35/37). Sti/Evo are rally-sport more than a true sports car. And I will laugh if someone tries to call a Miata a sports car...

Where did all the japanese sports cars go? The market killed them.
Miata is very much a sports car. In my mind and the mind of many car enthusiasts I know (both in person and online) a sports car consists of: 2 seats, rear-wheel drive, light weight. The optional one that some debate is convertible top.

Lack of power does not disqualify it from being a sports car.
I agree. The Miata is the sole reason Honda felt their idea of the "S2000" would sell enough to justify the cost of R&D and production.

S2k was in production from '99 to '09. i think that's long enough time in production for any car.
Can anyone name any other car that lasted 10 years recently?
Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Honda Civic, Ford Mustang, Nissan Sentra there are so many more....
um, i'm not talking about the continuation of same name. i'm talking about continuation of same platform.
Camry, Accord, Civic, they all have 4 year cycle, 2 year facelift...

I know the early 90's MB SL had a 10 year cycle.

E36 BMWs had a 10 year run.

Porsche 911 can't be beat in terms of model longevity though

Porsche 911 (1963–1989)

Honda notoriously makes something just to be able to say, " we did it, and did it better than anyone else has". Then moves on.
Power from displacement on the S2000. The RC51 costing 45 percent less than the Ducati, won the championship 2 or 3 times and then stopped making the twin all together.

Why does everyone think the S gets bad MPG's??? In the three years I have owned mine, I have yet to get under 28 MPG's combined. Thats not bad considering its a sports car. And two, ITS A SPORTS CAR! I didn't think Honda was going after the Prius demographic with the S2000.

I do however agree with the other issues.

A lot of decent guesses tossed around in this thread. IMO, the most likely culprits were:

- Economy and low sales numbers
- Emissions, mpg, safety regulations

A lot of good opinions here and hope there will be a Sk3 but Honda not only builds great vehicles but knows how to keep their mouth shut and stay undercover. I would agree with all the above with exception to the MPG.... don't think it was ever the intention to build a speedster that gets 35 miles on a gallon of gas and I would think most all of us when we put the top down and run through the gears are thinking about gas mileage. Even if it did get over 35 MPG it would not influence the mass as to buying, the S was meant for a certain niche (sp) (segment) of populations throughout the world and I am willing to bet if they had come out with a second generation S with some design changes and possibly as someone mentioned automatic that would appeal to a larger niche things might be different. Saying that, the way of Honda is the way of Honda and they are saying if you don't like it move on cause we are following our way....things come and go with Honda, the Ridgeline is dead for now because of the same way they went with the S and also the Crosstour and other models as well and it's not just Honda but mostly all of car makers....

IIRC the Mustang used the same platform (albeit with a huge body update) from something like 1979 to 2004ish... They changed engines (but not basic engine design), body work and interior, but the chassis, suspension geometry, etc were the same. THats actually why they got so fast ins so many forms of racing, the development of that chassis had so much time behind it, that even though it was archaic, it was so well developed that it was fast.

The s2k is not very unique in its logevity
