If it were not for the Miata, there would not be an S2000, boxter, 350z, TT, Z3/4, etc. The Miata revived the affordable, dependable roadster and it's popularity spawned all the rest.

Those that trash the Miata are inexperienced and unknowledged and NOT car enthusiasts but just car owners.

I don't consider being called a Miata clone an insult. It's the truth and the MX5 is a great little car. As has already been noted here. Mazda carried the flag for many years in North America all by themselves. One by one the others disappeared, Triumph, MG, Alfa, Fiat, Sunbeam, Porsche 914. Then in 1989 for some unknown reason, Mazda decided to bring back the small affordable roadster in defiance of market trends. For almost a decade, they stuck with it until all the Johnny come lately's jumped back on the bandwagon. Kudos to Mazda.

To this day, they've stayed true to the concept of a small, light, affordable roadster. They haven't succumbed to the horsepower wars. They haven't tarted the thing up with options that add weight. I'm flattered that the S2000 would be compared to an MX5.

Reminds of the time I was walking up to my S as two dweebs were looking at it. One guy said it was a Type H Miata. The H means high-performance. I just got in and drove off.

^^ two dweebs lol

from a distance i think i once may have mistaken a miata for an s.. the newer models almost have rims identical to the ap2 v2's and it was black so you are not able to the see the body lines as much.

However, once i saw the silver roll hoops it was pretty obvious.. the older miatas dont look like the s at all but i think the newer ones can cause some mistakes.

Because they're the unwashed masses?

The Miata is a cool car, but a male driving one carries certain social connotations that I'd steer clear from.

My S2K was parked next to a really old, worn out Miata once and the owner of the Miata asked me, "Hey, what MY is that MX-5?"

this even happened to me in a military do it yourself auto-hobby shop by the workers.....I was insulted.

Not to say the miata is a terrible car, I would just never buy one..

Maybe it sounds stuck up, but caring about the brand of car you drive is nothing new.......just go up to some ferrari owner and say nice corvette!....same thing!

I think a more interesting question is, "Why do you care?"
