Why the S2K is better than the rest
Its all in what you're looking for, but explain this one...
Porsche Boxster - too slow?!?
I think the two cars are pretty equal. They're definitely different cars, but pure performance... very equal.
And... Lotus Elise - too small / not practical!?! How much more space does the S2K have?

Toyota Supra - too heavy
The S2K is superior to the Boxster in autocross racing.

If I could own a Supra I would, however I dont want to give up my new S for a used Supra. When they come out with the new 2K5 Supra's, we may pick up a 3rd car...but I wont be getting rid of my S....ever!!!
S2000 is superior in track racing than any of the car listed above in stock form. Now Lotus Elise might give a good run for the money but assuming both are good drivers, S2000 is very potent car on any track.
However, if you are talking about everyday drive & straight line performance, S2000 will lose to bunch of cars listed above as well.
It reall depends on what you do with your car and why you want the car. If you are looking for straight line king and cheaply moddable car, than S2000 is not it.

to say that the R32 Golf is "too heavy" or the plain jane boxter to be "too slow" or even the Elise to be "too small and not practical" makes me seem that you, are in essence, missing the point of the creations of these vehicles. for one only a tiny fraction of those cars would be cross shopped with the S. the others have different niches. I feel that the corvette would out perform the S2000 on a course like Road Atlanta or Mazda Raceway;which is, IMO, fair to both vehicles.
On the Mini....assuming you haven't driven one....Try one with some real tires on it. I have yet to come across a better handling FWD car. It rivals my Miata in cornering force when the wheels are wrapped in T1's like my miata. Its just a little easier to upset the balance.
for the AMG.....I can't really think of a true two seater that is under 65K that will out run it and give all of the trappings that the SLK gives....
I guess my point is.....you can't compare everything to the S2000.....it's great.....no....it's awesome.....but they didn't create it in a vacuum.
