Default Why are these cars so twitchy?

Just wondering if there was a reason why these cars seem so sensitive during cornering? Ive driven/owned alot of cars.. Rx-7s, Mr2s..yadda yadda. ANyway, my '02 S2k is bone stock, tire pressures all in check, alignment good. Just seems that any variation in throttle inputs, or any even minor road imperfections will unsettle the rear end, moreso than any other car Ive driven. Is this just my car/driving style ,or are all these cars so twitchy?

This is part of the Raw-ness of the AP1, the AP2 is balanced toward understeer. To state simply, the balance of the car is so neutral, that oversteer is more common. Some here consider this an advantage. But it means you have to pay attention to the balance of the car. If you lift off the throttle midturn, near the edge, the weight of the car goes to the front wheels and the rear looses the grip it needs to stay planted. An experience driver can get more out of this setup, but the average driver is going to prefer an understeer bias.

The ease with which it can be steered with the throttle is one of this car's many charms.

But then again, maybe your tires are to blame. Are your rears perhaps no more sticky than the fronts due to size, brand, whatever?

Also the AP1 has something called bump steer. This changes tire angle as the weight of the car shifts. This helps the car around turns on the track, but will unsettle the car on a bumpy road. Do a google on bump steer to learn more.

s2k's have a tendency to oversteer which makes handling a bit squirrely.

Yeah, the S is quite squirrely, but also controllable, just really sensitive to inputs. Remember the first time you jumped on a sportscar throttle after driving econo cars?

I agree but I love it. I just got my S yesterday and I am almost affraid of it. I would love to find a place to get to feel the limits safely.

Twitchy is in the eye of the beholder. Maybe your skills and reflexes aren't good or quick enough for the car.
