If you purchase a battery tender you will be fine.

even if a battery freezes, it will not explode. it will swell and bulge but it will not explode from the cold.
once it freezes, it's pretty much a bad battery.
just bring the battery inside the house.

I have a couple of battery maintainers/minders. One for my car over the winter and one for my grandmothers florida car when she is up north for the summer.
They work by monitoring voltage and when the voltage gets low (about 12.5 volts) they will kick on and supply 1-1.5amps for a few seconds and turn off at around 13.5-14 volts. They keep cycling for as long as they are connected, and maintain full battery charge even while the battery is still connected in the stored vehicle. They will not boil the water out of the battery.
I got mine at WalMart for around $35.00. A fully charged battery (in the lower 48) usually doesn't freeze up.
A great item.

Battery tenders are the best thing to do. I'm cheap, so I just bring it inside, put in on a shelf in the basement, and put in on a charger in the spring bef9ore reinstalling it. Mine is 6 years old (23K miles) and going strong.

Batteries should only explode if you chuck them into fire or if you short-circuit them -- I think?

they can also explode if you overcharge them.

a while back, a few guys and myself took a 3/4 wrench and stuck it between the - and + terminals.
it swelled up and started oozing out the top.

technically it didnt explode.

"Don't leave a discharged battery in below-freezing conditions. Its electrolyte is basically just water, and it will freeze and damage the plates inside. Bring a discharged battery into a warm environment as soon as possible. Then charge it immediately, even if this means removing the battery from the vehicle or towing the vehicle to someplace where it can be brought inside." courtesy of msn news site.
