Default Will This Tow Be A Problem?

I have a 03 2000 with a tow hitch on it. I am planning to tow a Sunfish on a superlight trailer from Austin , Tx. to Denver, approx. 1000 miles. I will not be speeding and will be very careful on the road. Does anyone have any experience with this? The trailer and Sunfish weigh approx. 230 lbs. total. Thanks-

I'm sure it can be done, but the S2000 manual specifically says not to tow anything.

I know a few members here have made custom "trailers" to tow their tools and extra wheels to track events. I'm sure these setups weigh about as much as yours does.

This is a dangerous statement. Are you going to waranty his car if something DOES go wrong?

As mentioned above, I know people that tow with their cars. It is specifically prohibited by the manual. If you do it, be sure to balance the weight as much as you can. I would be most worried about tongue weight on the S. Too much and you will deform the uni-body, too little and you will be trying to lift the back.

This should be obvious, but leave extra breaking room, and stop slowly. This will help keep the weight of the trailer from pushing into the back of the car and damaging it that way.

I personally would not do it, but I have easy access to a full size pickup truck. It's your car, just be careful.

Autocrossers regularly tow those Harbor Freight trailers with four wheels and a tool box on board -- that's around 250 pounds of stuff right there. I've towed my trailer with two sets of wheels (the whole getup probably weighed 350 pounds or so) without apparent difficulty, although that was only for around 150 miles. Just be sure to drive gently -- don't shock the car.

I wouldn't worry about it at all, especially if the hitch is of good quality and attachs to strong points. I welded up a hitch for my 78 928 years ago to tow my jet ski, sure it had a v8 but it was still a porsche with probably a weaker chassis / driveline than the s2k, never had a problem. I'm assuming a sunfish is one of those light 1/2 man fibreglass sailboats that have been arround for years. Watch the clutch, that's the weak spot for our car.
