Windshield tape. Why is it there?
That's true! The tape is slicker than the paint, thus reducing drag. Therefore I am going to put tape over my whole car.
Of course the District Service Mgr. told me it was to protect against paint chips. Of course he couldn't explain why black cars don't have the tape. And then if that was the reason why didn't the factory put black tape on the front bumper (much more susceptible to chips)?

I haven't looked carefully at the MY2002 advertising to see if there is any evidence of a body color windshield frame (other than black) but if there is, a MY2002 owner could reasonably ask AHM to correct the paint if one took off the tape.

All the S2000's in the Honda UK site show a body color windshield frame - no tape. Download the product brochure (pdf file) for more photos to see how your car would look.
That said, I cannot see why the US market cars would hav poor quality paint under the tape. How does the pait room know to do a good job everywhere but the frame on a US car, and then treat all others at 100%?

The issue isn't the quality of the paint under the tape. The issue is that they often take fine sandpaper and remove the bumps in the paint before they put on the tape since the tape will show these bumps. If you happen to have a car that had a bunch of bumps that had to be sanded, you may be in trouble. Mine had a ton of marks and had to have that area re-painted. I'd do it again in a heartbeat evenso, since it looks so good without the tape.

There was someone sat. nite at our S2K hangout that had a silverstone with the tape off. It really looked good. Ive been tempted but the risk of the paint being screwed is what is keeping me and im sure all others from yanking it off. I seen some good suggestions and maybe the hair dryer trick would work best.
Is the paint Clear coated under there as well as, like the rest of the car?
