Winter idea...
The no heat thing in the Jetta might be something simple like a stuck thermostat. My old MR2 had a stuck open thermostat and the car would never warm up properly and thus no heat. Replaced the thermostat, bled the coolant system and the heat was fine.

My beater will always start... new glow plugs.
My beater doesn't have good heat.
My beater has a decent radio.
My beater gets 50 MPG.
My beater is diesel and will run forever and nothing will fall off.
My beater can crawl over most of the same snow that any SUV can.
My beater is very very slow, but a blast to drive in snow.
My beater's value is already super low, so selling to me is pointless.
My beater with all season tires will drive circles around an S2K with winter radials.
"I drive an s2000" does sound wayyyy better than "I drive a VW Jetta Diesel."... lol.
And I drive an AP2 not an AP1... so I have 245's in the back and I was wondering if the front wheels (215's) would fit in the back so that I could run winter tires on them.

Next. I've drag raced AWD Audi with all season radials across a snow packed intersection. It got beat real bad. No FWD with all season radials will stand a chance against a snow tired S2000.
Yes, the front AP rims will fit on the back axles, just not the other way around.
^^ I had an Audi A4 (AWD) with four studded snows (Gislavads, as I recall) out in Colorado and NM for a couple of winters. Even raw ice wasn't a problem. That would have given you a run, although your extra power may still have done the trick.

(Oh, and I can't imagine that full-time use of the front wheels on the back hubs is a good idea, even if it works temporarily.)

4X4 (with locking diffs and transfer cases) + studded snow tires > AWD + studded snow tires > 4X4 + snow tires > AWD + snow tires > FWD + snow tires > RWD + snow tires > AWD + all seasons > FWD + all seasons > RWD + all seasons.
Hell i am all about driving the S in winter. I will even have the top down when its in the 50's.
But when you wake up in the morning to 6 inches of fresh snow and the streets havent been plowed, then its nice to jump in the hooptee with front wheel drive and go.
Not to mention around here they sand the hell out of the streets but the sand is more like rocks and your just asking for major window chips if you drive right after a snow storm.
Its also nice having a hooptee when you roll up to walmart to do some shopping or what have you. There are some places i just dont take nice cars.

Further, as much as I'll advocate using the S year 'round, I'll stipulate that I use our Forester to haul 4x4 posts and so on from Home Depot. HPH

I've hauled long lumber in my S in the summer time when the top can be down, but that was only about 6 2X4s. I'll concede to your point.
