Default Would you buy a 1999 s2000

Hello.. I want to buy a s2000. My last car was a VR6 golf I was constantly off the road fixing it or trying to make it fast and handle and look good. which cost me 1000s and did my head in.

Ive decided to sell up and buy a hassle free, all ready done for me car.

The idea behind the s2000 is that it looks good standard. handles, its already rear wheel drive and comes with 250bhp from standard. AND that it will be a reliable hassle free car to own.

You listen to top gear and they say one has never broken. I come on here and they talk about gearbox problems, diff problems, cracked retainers in the head, ECU problems.

are they reliable?

Id find it easier to buy a 1999 model with 100,000 miles for around £6000, is this a bad idea?.. should i save and pay 10,000 for one with 45,000 miles.

Tom

Mileage sounds good for that year. There is a sticky about what to look for when buying an S that you should look at. I think its in the Under the Hood section.

Definitely take it for an inspection, but if it checks out, then go for it!

I remember Clarkson making a point about how VTEC is known to be reliable and Honda has never had a mechanical failure of that system. You'd have to find a fairly creative definition of mechanical failure to hold that true (are the solenoids part of the mechanical failure too or just the rotating components?) but I can't believe that Top Gear would make a claim that no S2000 has ever broken because there's no conceivable way that could be true.

My 2002 has been hassle free aside from the starter - it's a vehicle, it will wear. Make sure you can afford to not only purchase the car but also maintain it.

Nothing to fear, just have it inspected by someone who knows the S and what to look for.

Just do a thorough inspection. If everything checks out then go ahead.

It's a personal choice to be honest. I wouldn't buy any car with mileage that high (unless it was an old school VW or something) simply because I want to age with the car. Again, personal choice.

Dont worry about the mileage, it is a 1999. Damn its not a Ferrari, its a car that is driven. Just inspect it, know what to look for.
I bought a 1993 Honda Prelude 10 years ago with 125k. I sold it at 264k and nothing was wrong with it.
My S, I did by at 22k, but it was mint from an old guy. Its a Honda.
