Does one need to change the stock head unit (2001 model)?

I mean, can I get by quite happily with just replacing the OEM speakers?

Thanks,

The 2001's stereo sounds infinitely better even with the poor speakers. The base is heck of a lot louder when turned up. When the top is down, it is still clearly loud enough to hear at speeds. As I recall, both decks have fader to the rear. In fact, many people might not know this as both of my S2000's had it set to the middle. when I moved the fader to the front only, the stereo was a lot louder.

I have a 2001 and the sound is incredibly poor with the stock system, can't imagine how bad it must be if this is BETTER than the MY 2000 stereo! Yes there is plenty of base available, but unless you're one of those a$$holes who drives with the base so loud that you can hear the speakers thumping before the car even comes into view, it's wasted base. Can't wait to upgrade my stock speakers.

Loki: 2 questions (assume here that I am mechanically declined). 1st, we can replace the speakers with any 6 1/2" round speaker? (I tried to search for speakers like you suggested, but didn't have much luck).
2nd, how hard is it to get the door panel off to replace the speaker? Are there some rudimentary instructions available?

thanks
