WRX or S2K
Hey gabedude, I too am also pondering WRX or S2000? I was in 2 different dealers this week and couldn't decide what to do. I test drove the WRX about 2 months ago and decide to pass on it because I really don't need a practical sedan. But after reading SCC and C&D I decided to give the WRX a second shot this week. I'm still not all grins after driving the WRX but I like the power and $10k savings. Only thing I'd do immediately if I got a WRX would be 17" wheels and shocks/springs. I would probably do a Stage 1 mod a year or two down the road once I get tired of the stock power.
Also drove another S2000 this week, my 3rd test drive so far and still think maybe it's worth the $10K hit. One thing that's going to help me decide is when Honda releases the '02 MSRP. If it's in the range of $33K then I think I'll buy it. After all in my heart that's really what I want.
Oh by the way, the scooby2 handle, totally random when I joined the forum and has nothing to do with Subarus.

GET THE WRX....I recently traded in my S2000 for a WRX and OH MY GOD! Don't get me wrong, the S2000 is an AWESOME CAR and I would love to have one again, BUT, the WRX is so much more fun......Just as fast, Handles 100 times better, all wheel drive, you can drive year round with it, don't have to worry about where you park, much more fun with a little off-roading that you would shoot yourself for doing in the S, doesn't matter if it's dirty, much nicer / roomier / quieter interior, much more room for everything.
Idealy, having the S2000 and the WRX would be the best...But, if it's your only car, I would definitely recommend the WRX.....Several of us S2000 owners have switched over to the WRX and we don't look back because there is no reason to.

If you want a very competent, easily modifyable, high performance sedan at a bargain price, and most importantly, don't really care that its not the most attractive car in the world, the WRX is the choice.
The S2000 makes a near ideal low(er) cost pure sports car. And it's stunning.
...but I also have "utility" cars/trucks in the garage if I need to hall some crap back from home depot.
But think about this: I am about to go out for a hour or so mountain drive in the S2000. Alone. Purely for driving pleasure. I don't think I would be all that interested in doing the same in a WRX. Or an M5 for that matter...
The WRX is a fine choice for those who need a practical all weather car. Next years STi version will be even more desirable.
I had to take a 2000 Legacy GT to the subaru dealer for servicing (as a favor this week). I noticed that they had at least 6 WRXs on the lot. Thats in PA where we get snow. You can probably get a better deal than MSRP on them.
Bottom line is the S2000 has style, handling and is a pure sports car. The WRX is a souped up economy/family car. Can't really compare them. I think they should have used the legacy platform for the powertrain.
I'm like PFB, I love the S2000, but I also have a truck (NO SUV FOR ME) for practical reasons: hauling, snow, work etc.

Why is anyone trying to choose between two entirely different types of car? One is for drivers who maybe have to take the kids around in the back and who's wives/girlfriends insist on something a 'bit more practical'. They're also 2 a penny - what's the re-sale value like and is that going to wipe out the saving in buying them in the first place?
S2000s are sports cars - everyone knows that has nothing to do with practicality
If you're looking for a comparison to a WRX, you should look at something like a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI. That is the same kind of car as a WRX, only better. And yes, it's one ugly mother
Maybe you can't get them in the States, but they should be available on import.SiK182, your status comes up as "Owner"
I can't get over the looks. Too boy racer up front, but kind of frumpy everywhere else.
But, they are an absolute blast to drive. It was either Car and Driver or Grassroots Motorsports that gave such a glowing, over the top review, they couldn't contain themselves. They ended the article with a quote from Will Smith in the movie Men in Black.
"I gotta get me one of these!!"
I couldn't say it better myself (styling excluded).
I expect the young crowd here in town that seems to be going after these cars will be showing me their taillights when software upgrades become available.
Oh well.
BTW, you can put ice on the horizontal mounted intercooler. How freaking cool is that?

Just jumped back from the i-club forum (funny I only joined yesterday) and I tend to agree with those there who say if you think the WRX is ugly as hell, it's probably not what you'd what to be seen in and not the car for you. I don't think it's ugly, rather the front end is aggressive looking. Very similar to the MB E-class with those big headlights. The front overhang does seem a tad long. Saying that the WRX is ugly is kind of like non-owners of S2000s saying that the S2000 is gutless and has no power below 6K. Once enough people say that and read it, everyone agrees and thinks it's true. Don't think so.
Way things are going, I think invoice + 200 is possible for the WRX.
