I think the Porsche 911 and Boxster drivers with their automatics will collectively disagree, but this is why it is difficult to get a real definition of the term...

Skyline GT-R is a GT car, hence GT-R

So is 911. Boxster is a sports car.

This all assumes you go by the definition of RWD, 2-seater, open-top.

It's all in the head. The S2000 may be sports cars to us (and the insurance company! Ugh ), but it may not be to other people. Same for any other car.

Oh, yea! When I was growing up, our neighbor drove a Spitfire. Our other neighbor down the block had an Austin Healey 3000 series 2+2, but I distinctly remember him calling it a roadster, not a sports car. At any rate, it doesn't matter. It was a beaut.

Ok... then what is the WRX Sti? It has 4 doors????????????? But the handling, power, speed and everything else screams sports car????? I don't know it's 0-60 time, but I am assuming 5.0 seconds.

So now I wonder what determines the difference between a car in the GT category and a sports car category?

I agree about the automatic, but the Mustang GT/Cobra, Camero Z28/SS, and Ram Air/Trans Ams I consider very much sport cars, with back seats.
Yep...that's why I said, "in my opinion". To me, those are muscle cars.

As for all those folks driving 911s, boxters, vettes, RX-7s, etc with automatic transmissions -- well, they just want to look like they're driving a sports car without actually learning how to do it

You can have 2 seats or 2+2, open top or fixed, standard or automatic, but if a major aspect of its design focus wasn't on superior handling then it aint a sports car, even if it looks like one.
