I just re-read this post. So far, I have resisted the temptation to install an intake and exhaust on my S. Not that I haven't been tempted - especially the intake. I have removed the top of the stock intake box a couple of times just for grins and man that growl when you open the throttle is sweet. But, if there is any chance that a modified intake will contribute to valve burning issues - I think I will continue to resist the temptation. My car is running extremely well right now and the sounds it makes with OEM exhaust and intake are just fine for an old fart like me.

Just adding my experience. 06 was done ~ 65k miles. Some exhaust valves had zero clearance and everything else was tight. I also had a check engine light misfire on #3 which went away. Tried new plugs and new coil pack(and moved the coil packs around) before the valve adjustment. Initial compression test showed around 250psi on all cylinders except #3 which tested at 190. Didn't bother to test after the adjustment.

This also got rid of the horrible first gear hesitation for me and I gained a good amount of torque below 5k rpm.

I performed my second adjustment today. My 2009 had 41K miles when I performed the first one. I now have almost 62K miles on her. Here is Billman's comment on what I found at that time:

That is very ignorant of them to say, don't ever listen those folks.

Rest assured that waiting until there is an issue means that a valve has already been torched.

With your car at 42k miles and the exhaust valves at .007, expect them to be torched around 65k miles if not sooner. So good job.

You said you found a couple of intakes loose, and that is what you will find on all s2ks that have never been adjusted. So that's a good indicator that you measured precisely.

Hurting the tube seals is near impossible. Just make sure to push the seal lips back before re-installing cover.

I did go back and popped the cover again because I realized I may not have seated the spark plug tube seals properly. It turned out I had not! Thank you Billman!

I now have 61K miles on my S. Much easier going back the second time. I still had the Amazon 2 in 1 tools for adjusting and Craftsman bent feelers (old school-USA). Here is what I found:

All the intake valves were still at .010 with one on #1 at .011.

1 and 2 exhaust valves were perfect. #3 had one at .10. #4 had one at .012 and the other was .010.

I replaced the valve cover gasket as well as the bolt gaskets. (They all came together in the parts bag from Honda) I also had new spark plug tube seals. However, my tubes were bone dry, the seals themselves seemed in great shape so I decided not to replace them. When I placed the valve cover back on I had to gently wiggle the cover to see the seals pull themselves over the tubes. Nice fit.

All in all I was pretty happy how it turned out. I wanted to be sure nothing was getting too tight especially after what I found at 41K miles. (My car is stock and has not been tracked but I do have the opportunity to do a fair amount of VTEC on twisty Sierra Nevada roads where I live.) In addition, the other adjust at 41K was my first and I wanted to see how it held up.

At the first adjustment, 41K, I decided to replace the spark plugs (OEM NGK) I did not replace them today. They all were identical in color, all in good typical shape.

I believe Bill is now recommending 0.012" for the DBW AP2 exhaust valves, 0.001 looser than spec as the DBW (2006 and later) AP2 engine runs lean. Mine were set to a "loose" 0.011".

Yes currently setting all DBW cars to .012 exhaust side.

The amount of tight valves on DBW has grown to over 80% over the last few months.

The question now is, those running Flashpro on their '06, can we set/ program it to run marginally more rich thereby reducing the risk of burnt valves?

Question #2, what is the lowest mileage seen with tight valves?

I read all 34 pages and wanted to see what y'all think.

2006 AP2 with 66K miles

All exhaust valves sat at .011
Intake side, a 0.12 can go in but hard, .011 can go in with drag but .010 floats on all 4.

Should I adjust them?

Thank you

I would. Easy to do and the cover is off. No down side.

just did adjustment on new to me, 2006 (70,000 miles- 114,000kms) within an hour of picking it up. It has never been opened so I was quite apprehensive.

All Intakes were on looser end of the spec at .009- 1 or 2 were just a hair more at .0095. I went with .009 for INTAKE (I ran .008 on my AP1)
All Exhaust were tighter consistently at .008 with one at .007 on cylinder 3. I adjusted to .012 as recommended above.

Glad its done now- ready for the dragon.

Checked jvf1's 2008 CR on the weekend. We had done valve adjustment 2 years prior- about 17,000 kms driven since. Runs Gernby tune flashpro. All INTAKE had not moved off 0.008". All EXHAUST had not moved off .011". I readjusted to new 0.012" spec.
