I'm looking to do a valve adjustment on my 2008 UK AP1 Facelift DBW at the weekend; I've searched the forums for a recommendation for the valve clearances and I can only find the normal AP1 recommendations and the US AP2/DBW spec discussed on this thread. Does anyone have any insight as to how the AP1 Facelift DBW factors into all this?

My take on all this is that ap1's have zero tendency to develop tight valves within the oem maintenance interval. The issues that have cropped up are only on the leaner running ap2 dbw cars. I believe the specs for ap1 valve settings are Intake .008 to .010, and Exhaust .010 to .011. I set my ap1 on the tight side of the oem spec., (Intake .008. Exhaust .010). My engine runs beautifully. I plan to check my valves every other season which for me means at about 30K mile intervals. I honestly don't think they need to be checked that much. But, I enjoy keeping an eye on them, and I'll probably replace spark plugs at the same time. Overkill for sure.

I believe Billman sets his ap1 at these same gaps. He has reported almost no change in the valve gap settings in his ap1 over 100K miles of very hard driving. As long as you are not abusing the engine with mechanical over revs and the like, the ap1 valves are solid. It is a magnificent engine. No worries.

Adding my experience... I recently bought an ‘06 with 53k miles. Maintenance records didn’t idicated any prior valve adjustment. I found intakes were ranging from .009 to .011. Most of the exhuast was at .008, with a couple at .009 and .010. I set intakes to .008 and exhaust to .010 with intent to perform the adjustment every 15k miles (not a daily driver). I replaced the gaskets and seals, though the originals were in good shape. Oil was really clean... lovely golden color. The engine idles and accelerates smoother. Under the hood sounds great too... quiet like a sewing machine. Thanks Billman! This gives me confidence to lovingly abuse the motor.

With a FIPK, Berk Header and HFC, I really love the sound of the engine/exhaust. The valve adjustmnt made it noticeably better. Billman TCT, Flash Pro and Gernby Tune are on the way.

Did mine this weekend.

Cylinder 1: .006
Cylinder 2: .009
Cylinder 3: .009
Cylinder 4: .008

Intake seemed in spec. What would a symptom be of an out of spec intake? CEL?

Also replaced spark plugs (12 yrs, 72K, assuming original). They were a nice very light brown.

JasonMG - those are your exhaust specs? Tight!
What year is your engine?
Do you have good compression?

Your short VA interval does not change the burning effect of the exhaust valves, only the clearance can do that. Set the exhaust to .012 (2006-2009 cars) no matter what the interval. Your engine will thank you for it.

Going to be doing mine soon on my 08. Got the .012 for the exhaust. Is .008 - .009 still the go to clearance for the intake (got that info from going through this thread)?
Please confirm. Thank you.

Yes .008 or .009 is good for the intake side.

Doing mine now, I’ve built a lot of cars and never done a VA.
All exhaust valves were .007 - .008 with one at .005!
Gonna go with

.011 move freely
.012 drag
.013 no-go

Luckily I only drive the car a few times a month for 5-15 minutes at a time.
