Default 02 ap1 s2000 2nd & 3rd gear grind & 6th won’t go in.

Hi guys, so I own an 02 ap1 with 70,000 miles on it. Like the title says when I switch to 2nd and 3rd gears at high rpm sometimes 2nd gear will grind but 3rd always grinds, they still go in but grind. Now 6th gear won’t go in at all, whether the car is running or not. I’d would like to know how to go about addressing/fixing this problem. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Check the fluid level of your clutch fluid reservoir

hey Bri, clutch fluid level is good and clean as well. I’m thinking of doing transmission fluid and see the effect it’ll have on it. Also clutch has like 1 inch of freeplay when I step on it. Not sure whether that would have something to do with it. When driving without engaging Vtec, all gears seem to be fine except 6th as I had mentioned feels like hitting a wall when I try to put it in.

Hmmm. Maybe you have air in the clutch lines? Did you ever bleed the clutch fluid out? If so, did you let the reservoir run dry? If not, when did this start happening?

If you haven’t bled your clutch fluid, I’ll try that. here’s the DIY for your reference

Before you bleed clutch, adjust the clutch rod under the dash at the pedal. There is a very good youtube diy. It takes like a two minutes.

Your symptoms, and observation on freeplay, are classic clutch rod out of adjustment.

Only tools required are a 12mm wrench and a youthful back that can contort under the dash.

Clutch bleed might help 1st & 2nd, but sounds like your 5th-6th synchros are shot. You can try to regain 6th by parking the car and just repeatedly forcing the gearshift into sixth. This breaks through the burrs on the brass synchro points, which form due to grinding 5th. If successful, you'll probably have to double-clutch into 5th and/or 6th to avoid further grinding, but at least you'll have all of your gears.
