1 to 2 grind!
ok guys, i have an 03 s2k and first to second will grind maybe two times a day and i mean GRIND THE
UP! not a reg. grind i have heard. more like metal totally getting
ed up. whats the reason for this? i know the 00 and/or the 01 had a recall on this but an 03 should have been fixed and was from waht i know. what can cause this LOUDD ass grind? thanks.
Sounds like my car! I had about 2~3 grinds per day for the 1st few thousand miles of ownership (new). I took it to the dealer, but they couldn't reproduce it. Of course, they didn't rev it up, or shift quickly either.
I went through many different tranny lubes, which some helped, and others didn't. The best fluid I have found is GM Synchromesh Friction Modified (not the regular GM Synchromesh). I don't ever grind into 2nd now, but I make sure I keep my oil fresh. Before I found GMSFM, I was changing my oil every 3K miles, which helped a lot. Now I'm only changing it every 7K or so.
While trying different oils, I also adjusted my clutch pedal. My clutch pedal had excessive play at the beginning of the stroke that caused the engagement point to be very close to the floor. Reducing the free play allowed me to get the clutch completely disengaged during a quick shift. This reduced my grinding quite a bit, but didn't eliminate it. You should also teach yourself to shift from 1st to 2nd more slowly and precisely. This box doesn't forgive a sloppy shift.

change the diff and tranny fluid as suggested (there are other threads on this)
try double clutch shifting when car is cold
try shifting at higher RPM's or different RPM's.....

Also, check and see how your clutch fluid is doing. Maybe a change there is also in order. Do you put the clutch all the way to the floor when you shift and are you being very calculated about where you pull the shifter when going into second?

There is a long thread about this problem a few months ago. I have the same problem. I have found a lot of people fixing this by switching to "GM Synchromesh Friction Modified" tranny oil. NOT the orginal "GM Synchromsh".
Thanks to gernby for suggesting this first on this forums
. This tranny oil fixed a lot of s2k grinds and nsx grinds. Fluid has also been certified by RoadRage for having the right contents on it.
Thats the cheapest change you can do. I suggest trying this first, if it fails then u can try other things like, synchro rebuild, etc...
