How much will it lunge if at all if car is started with trans in 1st or rear? Secondly, on a hill that has a decent incline/decline, will putting the car in gear really prevent the car from rolling if e-brake fails? I'll have to test this one. If it doesn't hold, then there is not point to leave it in gear then no? If all you ever park is on a totally flat surface, I don't really think in or out of gear makes any difference.

The car will actually lunge a few feet, which could cause ur car to slam into a poll or another car, thats something I would prefer not to do...

I don't bother putting it in gear if I'm on a flat surface. Anything else, in gear definitely.

I always let the parking break hold the car and use the transmission as a back up. Meaning parking break first then first or reverse. Should the car be put in gear then the parking break, to me that would but unneeded stress on the gears in the transmission.
Came in here to post this. I use the exact same method.
Parking brake/E-brake first, let go of normal brake pedal (car shifts weight onto e-brake, stops), and then I engage the transmission.

What you do is your own business.... trying to convince others and yourself that there is no need for putting it in gear is another....and YES putting it in gear will prevent it from moving.

You should stick to automatic trannys if your worried about dumping the clutch immediately after starting the car which is the only way it would lunge.

Lets see...... put clutch in, push start button, don't look or feel the shifter, dump clutch, lunge forward and hit pole.

Your probably the type that dumps the clutch after it's parked and kills the car in first... then you would definately lunge.

Instead of insulting someone why dont you learn how to read.

My first post said the reason I dont leave it in gear is because I have remote start and you cant leave it in gear or it will jump and hit something

So stop being an ass and learn to read.

I am used to using only the E-brake because I park on a flat garage floor 90% of the time. However, if I park on a hill I ALWAYS put it in gear. The first week I had my car, I parked in a friend's uphill driveway with just the e-brake. We came outside to smoke a cigarette and my car was out in the middle of the street. Luckily it was 3am and nobody was out driving around the neighborhood. That taught me a good lesson about parking in gear on any kind of incline.

The gear will defiantly hold the car, if your car moves the opposite direction of the gear you are in on a hill or incline then i strongly suggest the you get your engine looked at because you have lost compression
