This is surface aluminum alloy oxidation. Common, esp in cars that were parked outside during their lives. The oxidation may become an issue, if it goes well below the surface and threatens the integrity of the metal. You would need to replace those parts.

Aluminum oxidation doesn't work like that. Unlike rust on steel parts, oxidation on aluminum will actually protect it from further corrosion.

Oxidation doesn't just wipe off. It will require some sort of abrasive to remove it.
potato tomato. Depending on the severity, majority of what I have experienced just wiped off. I never took a metals class, I'm just a boring accountant and going on first hand experience.

That's great, but aluminum oxidation will not just wipe off.

Its just cosmetic, but its not something you can just wipe or clean off. You could put a lot of work into polishing, but then you need to keep it polished or it will look worse.

Since its rough cast surfaces, its not something you can just polish lightly to remove the pitting.

The car was likely driven in salt and not properly cleaned. You can pressure wash it at a carwash after driving it through salt. Make sure the hood properly closes. Is your air dam still present? Splash shields? S2000 bays are actually pretty well protected. Tons of salt driven S2000's still have bolts in the bay with the zinc plating intact.

BTW...since you're all talking about corrosion or oxidization.....all oxidization will protect a metal. Oxidization is a esentially a ceramic surface coat. This is true with iron, aluminum, titanium...or any metal. Once the surface oxidizes, the rest of the material is protected.

I've read multiple times that this stuff makes any aluminum part look brand new: Ali-brite

I'm still looking for someone who sells this stuff.
If you find anyone, let me know.

The aussies use it a lot, and it's for sale on the Australian ebay... but it can't be shipped over seas by a company, because it's a ''dangerous liquid''

So any aussies here?
