Default 2nd gear grind fixed!

My 02 has 13k miles on the original transmission fluid and would often grind on the 1-2 upshift without a "pause that refreshes".

So I put in about a 50-50 mix of Redline MT-90 and MTL (total 2 quarts) and I can speed shift all day long now. The transmission feels great, no grind at all even with instant shifts. I used the 50-50 blend to reduce cold notchiness (since this fluid might be in there through the fall), and there doesn't seem to be any notching now, at least any more than with the Honda fluid when it's stone cold.

If you've got grind in an 02, then here's another datapoint that Redline transmission fluid is the first thing you should try.

Thank you for the tip, I thought that it might be a stock lubricant problem. I am switching mine today.

I used Redline in my NSX for 50k miles without any trouble.
Redline won't be any less durable than the Honda fluid, but you may want to change it at the same time you get an engine oil change if it starts grinding again.

thanks for the tip, and glad to hear it solved your problem. I get the occassional 2nd grind, and need to change my fluids. What exactly is MTL, and where do you buy the MT-90?

http://www.redlineoil.com/products.htm

MTL and MT-90 are two different types of oil from Redline.
Blended together they have about the same viscosity as the Honda oil, but handle high temperature better, which is usually what makes you grind. You can use straight MT-90, but MTL alone wouldn't be thick enough. Any performance shop will carry Redline oil. Just do a google search.

thanks - do you recommend mixing the two for the diff fluid as well? Im changing both out, and might as well buy it all at once.
