Hey there fellas new to the forum and just recent purchased a 2001 silver s200 with 62k miles on it with an ap1 AEM cold air intake.

when driving in second gear between 20 to 25mph the grinding is noticeable and you can feel the vibrations inside the car.

The owner did an oil change before he sold me the car and he used mobile 1. As to whether he changed the transmission oil im not sure on. I' really new to this car but not new to standard vehicles. My truck needs a tranny oil change every 60k, when should i do a tranny oil change for an s2000?

Could there be any major problems coming out of this? has anyone else experienced the same thing i'm describing? I've searched other threads but they are all describing the grinding in high RPMs where as i get the grinding near 3 and 4 rpm

Any input is much appreciated.

Those threads do in fact refer directly to what you are talking about. Change the transmission fluid following the FAQ or the two running threads do it now and when it comes back. If it doesn't go away then you need to rebuild it.

Don't ask which fluids to use, read and do it.

Fienoma, i had a similar issue when i first got my s2k, I soon read that a "notchy" shift is something we all have had experience with. Wear of the syncronizers is prob the problem. Try getting some good synthetic trans fluid, i use redline gear oil. Also be cautious of your shifting- to prolong your tans match rpm's to shift points.

Try to make smooth shifts, and get some good oil in there.

I had this same issue in 3rd gear. Follow the transmission FAQ INTJ recommended and also follow this shifter grease thread. You can also get a weighted shift knob which helps. If it grinds hard you may have bad synchros which...well that sucks

Clutch fluid and clutch adjustment has 3x the effect on 2nd gear grind than transmission fluid. trust me

Then change it. It's a good rule of thumb to change fluids on any used vehicle (not just the S) if you're uncertain about the maintenance history so you have some known good points.

Depends on your driving. The manual has an interval stated in it, IIRC. I change mine every 15K (along with the diff) as I can tell the difference.

I'd also seriously suggest checking the clutch fluid. I had problems with grinding second when my master cylinder was leaking.

I just did the DIY tranny fluid change last night and now the shifting is much smoother but there is still that grinding. I guess it might be the synchrone or the clutch. ill check the clutch fluid later tonight. Would changing out the rear diff oil help? do you guys normally change it out with every tranny fluid change?

That grinding is likely permanent. I agree with Bill's comment on the fluid change for the MC, as mine was really dirty at 30k, but not with his assertions. The diff is a full year at the shortest.

Okay..so i haven't checked the fluid just yet but i do have a question..is acura MTF the same as Honda MTF??
