Default 2nd gear woudn't engage

Last night I was getting on the car on the way home (it's an 02 unlike my name suggests). I was at a light and went from a roll vs an RSX (done up nice he said he had an intake, header and exhaust). We took off at about the same time and we stayed even untill I shifted into 2nd. Only There was no 2nd gear to put it in to. Didn't grind. I just woudn't go in. I thought I just missed 2nd gear. So we did the same thing at the next light, and the same thing happened again. However after we each turned off, I tried 4 or 5 times and I was unable to reproduce the problem.

Any ideas what it could be? Does this sound like something the dealer should look at, a fluke thing, or something I did wrong?

I've never had this happen before. I have about 6k mi on the car, and I am not shy about driving it hard.

All comments welcomed.

Thank you
scott

If the cars been sitting a while...the transmission needs to warm up.

2nd gear synchro might be toast.

When you say, "It didn't go in", what happened next? Did you let the clutch out anyway and applied gas? If so, what did it do? If "it didn't go in", then it had to be in neutral. Was it? Maybe in the excitement of "racing" someone, you didn't actually move the shifter like you were supposed to. You may not have been in the 2nd gear gate. OR, since you didn't grind and you didn't find 2nd, I'm thinking you didn't actually move the shifter as far as it needed to go. And since you weren't able to reproduce this when things "calmed down" and the car was "normal" again, I suspect nothing broke.

xviper it was in neutral, but I gave it a hard pull and it was in the 2nd gear grove! I've never missed a shift before. I thought it was in gear. Then I pouced on the gas, and revlimiter a few times before I realized what happened when I wasn't picking up speed. When I get on the car vs another I shift realy fast and the rpms don't drop much while i'm shifting, if at all. I couldn't power shift it in. I had to lower the RPM's to get it to engage into second gear. It wouldn't go in. When I realized I wasn't in geat, I was trying to pop it in and hold the rpms at about 7k. As I let off the gas, it went in (under vtec). I can't see how the RPM's would effect the engagement with the clutch down. Car was well warmed up (driven for about 1 hour before this).

But you may be right maybe I came off the clutch too early? Maybe when I reached the notch I thought it was in gear... I don't know. I got on it today, although I didn't push it to 8800. I did a few 75-- to 8000 shifts first to second no problem.

If it was the syncros wouldn't the problem continue? Or could it be intermitiant or would it just be a problem at 8500 and up shifts?

What would changing the clutch oil do? I checked the fluid level today and it was at the right height.

Thanks for all the input guys!

that happened to me once and i hated it!!!
i just tryed and tryed , but i coul;d only shift right when not racing!
then i slowly started to give an extra 'clutch' , and it worked fine!
so u might be not giving enough clutch like me
try it like i did , and i bet u will be fine!

I've had a couple of instances during autocrosses where it felt like 2nd wasn't truly engaged - the shifter just didn't feel right with some extra friction. I believe the first time I actually misshifted and had to try again to get it into gear. On both occasions I spent time immediately after the run was complete going completely through the gears which seemed to free up the shifter. It was as if the shift linkage for second was slightly bent or out of alignment/adjustment. It hasn't happened more recently so maybe it was just a brain fart...
