Hey guys, Just got my 4.56 installed, and ready to break-it in, initial drive feels great, no whine, nor grind or nothing. I expected shorter shifts, but its not bad at all.

I know that it's supposed to be driven lightly for aprrox. 1000 miles for break in. Is this true?

If not, what are the minimum, better, best proper break-in procedures?

Also, for break in, I used the Honda gear oil GL-5, what would be the best gear oil after break in? I plan on draining and refilling after break in, so what gear oil should I use?

I searched for this using the Search, and could not find useful info..

there is a heat cycle that you were supposed to do with the gears the very first miles you drove them. did you do this?

 

I don't believe Honda sells a GL-5. What exactly did you use?

 

I read somewhere,break in period should be around 600 miles.
No hard starts,and/or clutch dumps,drive about 30 minutes,and let them cool for a while,etc...
I plan on changing my diff fluid after the first 1000 miles,and use 75w90 Redline gear oil,for break in ,and after.
Not sure about that Honda GL 5 oil you mentionned;I would be worried.

 

honda does not sell a GL-5. find out what they put in your diff. who did the install?

 

I was told to have them go through 3 heat cycles before any hard driving and to change my fluid to LE-607 after 1000 miles.

 

Im sorry, it wasnt a Honda Gear Oil, however it was compatible. We even double checked with a Honda Dealership. I know for sure that it had a GL-6 rating.

Heat Cycles were done correctly.. 5 of them to be exact. Drive for 10-15 miles, then cool off for 30 minutes. I did this 5 times, just to be sure..

I read that it would be beneficial to drive normally (no hard vtecing clutch drops and such) for about 1000 miles, then flush, completely and then use a "better" gear oil.
Me and my cousin installed the gears. He runs an auto shop here in SD. I was there for the whole process. Everything was measured and cleaned. Backlash was set to .006, as they would expand to .008 after break in. Man I was suprised too, I have 63000 miles on my car and the gear oil inside the diff housing was still pretty clear. Everything was cleaned off (besides the LSD itself) and steam cleaned.

Just wondering what else I could do to ensure proper break in.

i'd be amazed if a honda dealership used GL-6 gear oil. where did you have the gears installed?

 

I have the new 4.57 R gears. I didnt know that the backlash setting (ideal) has been changed. I did set them at .006. Hopefully its not that bad.

However, I drove the car for about 300 miles today, from SD to LA and back. ( I finished the heat cycle.) Everything felt great, the very little (hardly noticable) whine that was there, is all gone. I am very pleased so far. The pull and the car feels a lot smoother, especially on the way back. I couldnt even tell the difference between the OEM and the 4.57R as vibrations, or noise. The only thing I could tell, obviously is the shorter gears.

The gears were installed at my cousin's auto shop, here in San Diego. He has his own shop, and I was there for all the measurements, and the whole process. Gear Oil was a GL-6 rating, brand im not sure.

I am ready to fully drain, and add AMSOL LE 607 Gear oil this week. Just need to get it done. Very pleased, definitely one of the best performance upgrade for the S! THe 4th to 3rd dowshift is DAYUMN good!
