4.57 noise problems suggestions please
fperra, what did you have your backlash set to?
I think I am going to pull my diff tomorrow and take it to my install people on Monday 1st thing. I have a feeling that it could be the carrier bearings. This will also give them the opportunity to re-check the backlash and and see how the teeth are meshing. I am hoping to get this resolved by Monday evening.
I also picked up a bottle of RR approved LE 607 (thanks PJ).

Great info fperra. I am beginning to hope that my symptoms require the same solution as yours.
So the backlash wandered out of spec due to the loose carrier bearings.
What is the recommended spec for the pinion bearings?
I am wondering if I can make a very specific list of things for the install shop to check this monday.

Follow the Helms manual for the pinion bearing settings. The only thing that doesn't jive in the Helms manual is the setting for the carrier bearings. I've done a lot of searches on the internet, and the general consensus of what I've found is that its very difficult to over torque the carrier bearings.
Glad to be of help. While we are at it, is there anyone out there who can make heads or tails of what the Helms manual says about adjusting the carrier bearing loads. I know Gernby has posted some thoughts on this, but anyone else?

thanks for that, I'll be doing the same as Asura in taking it apart again and doing the checks you suggested.
What page in the Helms does it give the carrier settings that dont jive?
I would have gone higher if the tool I was using didn't keep slipping out of the adjustment notches. From what I've researched on the internet, I've seen numbers from 50 to over 100 ft- lbs. One gear manufacture said that it is almost impossible to overtorque them, especially given the type of tool used to make the adjustment. Like I said in my earlier post, they are the same type bearings as the pinion, and those are adjusted to 94 - 210 ft-lbs.
