The carrier spec is taken with a pull gauge. You're correct in that there is no torque spec for the carrier. I would think at your setting the bearings will flake apart quite fast. I would find a magnet FILL plug so you can monitor if it starts to flake, without having to drain it and refill it.

I used a digital pull gauge with absolutely no preload on the carrier bearings and the pull force was on the order of 25 to 30 pounds. The Helms manual calls for 3.1 to 6.8 lbs. Thats why it makes no sense. Check some of Gernby's posts. He had the same problem.
