Default 5th and 6th stiff

Wish I'd read about skip shifting on the s2k sooner

So I've done a bit of reading, and it looks like skip shifting (which I've done on every car I've ever owned, 1st to 3rd, 4th to 6th etc) has ruined my gearbox.

can anyone recommend a specialist in Yorkshire or surrounding areas and a rough cost to fix?

Thanks

Actually i think i read a fix on here that can fix the "burrs" that you have in your gears. they say you have to punch it to redline and let it wind back down, up and down in each gear and that should flatten out the burrs and your tranny should be fine.

but one thing i always thought wouldnt you be going REALLY fast?? someone can chime in.

maybe its just something that must be done reguardless of danger??

X2. This happened to me too. Billman said the exact same thing.

Also - it's fun to go really fast

I solved mine though by just cycling 5th to 6th to 5th to 6th a bunch of times. It wears the burrs off after a few dozen shifts.

To fix:

Floor it at 6k rpm in 5th, wind out to 7k rpm, then snap off throttle, coast to 6k, snap on throttle at 6k, wind out to 7k, snap off throttle...etc.

Repeat this cycle at least 10 times. Can take up to 30 cycles. This will flatten the burrs on the 5-6 collar and allow normal shifting.

Any type of wot in 6th that you can safely manage will help 6th as well.

better get rehearsing what I say to the police

Billman. can I also shift repeadtely from 5th to 6th, and back, with the engine off, and clutch not engaged, or will just the WOT in 5th fix it?

The acel/decel thing works by applying engine torque, or engine braking, against the interlocking faces of the syncros, flattening them out. So it has to be done with engine running, and at an rpm that will have a lot of force in each direction. Hence the high rpm's.

Billman's fix smoothed mine out nicely.

Not that the forum needs me to confirm advice from the master!

Definitely not doubting what billman has said, but in an older post he mentioned you can row the gears from 5th to 6th and back to 5th with the engine off/gears cold to smooth it out.

Is this an additional step or can I fix just doing the WOT method?
