So I tried the fix last night and it's definitely helped. Traffic was too busy to do it repeatedly but i'll try it again tonight.

You don't need to go as fast as first thought either.

Thanks again for the advice. Genuinely thought it was new syncro/gearbox time.

What would you say the symptoms of this feels like?
My 6th gear can be tricky to get into, physically it requires more force than any of the other gears. It never goes in smooth, actually it feels kinda rough.
Like something in the gears / gear linkage is meeting a lot of resistance, the gear will never "pop" into place like it does in 1st through 5th.

It's been like this since I got the car, so I have no idea how or when this started.
I suppose one of the previous owners could've had a bad habit of skip-shifting into 6th gear.

my symptoms were 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th all smooth.

5th and 6th imagine the gearbox has mud between those two gears. Required additional effort but no noticeable crunching.

This must be common to people unaware of the dangers of skip shifting. 5th gear is largely pointless unless driving hard.

Thanks,
I'm pretty sure we are talking about the same thing - I find trying to explain how the shifter feels difficult

I'll give this fix a try once spring arrives. Hopefully I won't get arrested lol.

Doing that is the procedure to get it unstuck, as in 5th or 6th gear lockouts.

Operation is what cures it.
