Yet, the very next set of data: Edge with SPT170, has just the opposite results. Makes no sense that 0W-30 is more viscosity cold, than 10W-30.

Every oil is different. Each grade has a viscosity range: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/viscosity-charts/

So, you can have "thick" and "thin" 30 weights, ie that end up at the edges of the 30 weight range.

Castrol 0W30 is known as "German Castrol" and carries a bunch of European ratings. It's a thick 30 weight. Most of its contemporaries are 5W40 or 0W40s. Very different than the 5W30 oil.

This post concern only 5w30 on AP2 vs oem 10w30 oem recommendation, it is possible to avoid castrol debat on this post, i will ride with Gulf oil since i have very positive result on my yamaha fz-09 motorcycle, better than with the so good amsoil that i like so much but cost lots $, if you will debate on castrol oil, start a new tread, it dont concern this post.

With respect, JR

I think the point of the "Castrol discussion" is that saying 5W30 vs 10W30 is really meaningless without talking about a specific oil. Not that I think it's going to really matter in this context. We can really only guess why Honda would specify a 10W30, and in any case, they specified the oil back in the API SJ days, which looked nothing like modern API SN oils. Use what makes you happy, it'll probably be okay...

Yup, expert in the field of internet back pedaling :roll eyes:

I believe the reason people started discussing castrol is because your first post had "Syntec" in it. Castrol uses "Edge" now...but I think "Syntec" is still somewhere in the name.

Too much discussion anyway. I have no clue what Gulf's 5W30 is like. Give it a shot. It won't harm anything. If you see more oil consumption or noise....or some other tangible negative effect, then you can make the decision whether you want to keep using it or not.

My earlier point was that with a certain brand of 5W30, I saw that the car didn't run quite as well as it did on that same brand's 10W or 0W30. No harm done either way, I'm sure.

Exactly!

But I also agree that for street driven cars, it doesn't matter what oil you use as long as you stay close to the manufacturer's recommendations. Especially when talking about oil grades that are so close to each other like 5W-30 and 10W-30.
