Ive programmed so many honda keys. I feel kinda bad doing it in front of people. Our dealership charges a nice $80 in labor and had me do it on the service drive once. Mind you, not on an S2k (but all hondas with a prog. key are the same) and the guy watched me sit down, go through the hds laptop, and get out of his car 5mins later and give him his new key. I think he was slightly upset it cost that much for that little. Really though, if you're buddy buddy with a honda tech he'll probably do it for free (at least i would for the local community).

The HDS unit asks for a vin before it even lets you get into the menu to program the key, but in all honosty I dont think it actually uses it. Who knows, Ive never run into that situation. If it doesnt throw up any red flags right away, and its able to communicate, Im sure it will let it program a key.
As far as swapping the ECU without disconnecting the neg cable - you're technically supposed to disconnect it, but Ive unplugged many kinds of control units, including ecu's, with it connected and had no problems result from it.

i guess it would be best if i called the dealership. finding a vin might be a bummer. i would imagine that more people would have mentioned something though had they run into this, especially after buying an ecu.
You need the VIN from the newer ECU to do this right.
I have done this a few times already & each time, they needed the VIN on the ECU to input it in their systems to output the unlock codes on the ECU.
I have a few friends that work at Honda, so they hooked me up with free service.
