Default Actual name of the Vtec solenoid?

#12 in the picture from this link
http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...=CYLINDER+HEAD

Is that the Vtec solenoid? They call it a valve assembly spool on there. My solenoid is leaking and I'm wondering if I need #14 in that picture to fix it.

Thanks

Yes the vtec solenoid is called the spool valve.

I can't remember exactly if it only has the head to solenoid gasket or if it also has an o-ring on the top part of the vtec solenoid.

It has both, and only the screen filter gasket can be replaced, if the top one starts leaking, you'll need a new VTEC solenoid.

Thanks guys.

Also, is there another sensor or something below the vtec solenoid? I can't tell if my leak is coming from the vtec solenoid or the thing right below it.

Noob question, do I need to drain the oil to take these off or is the oil below that level when the car is cold?

Nah you're good to take the solenoid off. It may drip a bit, just put a rag right under it. But the oil level is well below it.

Quick question. I'm experiencing the same issue with a leaky valve assembly. Dealership of course recommended that I replace the whole assembly.

Were you able to do this yourself, or did you have someone do it? I've yet to take a look at the service manual and sometimes it's difficult to gauge how difficult the job really is.

Its very easy to do yourself, and likely all you need is a new gasket not a new entire assembly. I think its three bolts that hold the solenoid onto the head; 10mm socket.

The tct (timing chain tensioner) is below the Vtec solenoid. The o-rings on them have been known to cause a leak.
There is a sensor on the front portion of the Vtec solenoid that can crack and allows oil to pass through it and exit out of the connector.

I recommend replacing the 3 mount bolts, and torque them to spec. Those bolts will stretch when tightened, so if they have been removed/reinstalled a few times the bolt becomes weak and can break off in the head.
