This is going to sound really stupid but I noticed that my car had consumed oil down to the L on the dipstick so (thinking it was pretty empty) I added a large amount of oil from a 5L bottle. I should have checked this board earlier, then I would have know that about 1L was required. I think I added about twice that or more. The oil was showing a fair bit beyond the H.

I took the car for about a half hour drive after that and it revved ok throughout the rev range. There was no excessive smoke from the exhaust. Should I do anything about this? What are the implications of having too much oil in your engine?

Those links above say it all but you should probably remove some of that oil. If it's overfilled too much, the crankshaft can "whip" air into the oil as the counterweights pass near (or THROUGH!) the oil in the pan.

Air in the oil doesn't lubricate nearly as well as oil, especially at high revs...

Thanks for the help guys. I just checked it again and it is very full but since it goes beyond the flat bit of the dipstick with the x's, there is no way of telling how far over it is.

How do you let a little bit of oil out? I would have guessed that this is an all-or-nothing type operation. Either I drain and change the lot or I keep it in there.

How many miles do you have on your car? Perhaps you can perform the first oil change since you just have been adding oil? It is not necessary to unscrew the drain plug all the way in order to let some of the oil out. Just be careful not to unscrew is too much or else you will be doing a full oil change.

The car has been serviced twice, having an oil change both times so that's not really what I want to do just yet.

Ok, I'll look into letting some oil out. Thanks for the help.

I agree with the others that suggest to drain out the excess oil. I wear latex gloves when changing oil, and they would be especially useful in your situation. Just drain out a liter of oil and screw the drain plug back in place. Messy, but effective.
