Default A different approach to a cold air intake. Pics

Photoshoped of course.

Just an idea I had a few minutes ago looking at my car for the first time with the bumper off.

Yes, you would cut a long and narrow slit in the bumper. It could possibly be covered by a screen that is painted the same color as the car to make it less noticable.

This slit would inter infront of the radiator, but above the black slotted plastic insert thing-a-ma-bob.

I purchased a used front bumper to play around with something like this in mind. I would be concerned about the wind noise (whistle!) this might cause.

Would be interesting. Perhaps you should only make the slit 1/3 of the current length, to the left on your picture. Kinda like the Mugen bumper.

If it remains that long, I worry that someone would put a Knightrider LED in it or something

Round the edges and it shouldn't.

hmmm... The black slotted thing-a-ma-bob is there to keep the air pressure high in front of the radiator and lower in the engine compartment... By putting a hole in as you describe you'll be increasing the air pressure in the engine compartment thus reducing the air flow thru the radiator... you may end up with cooling problems. Its likely more complicated then that though... the air pressure in the area where you have the hole is likely very low, just like the area just behind the leading edge of a wing... You could however significantly increase the pressure there by using the cut out piece to form the top of a scoop on top of the hole. But i agree with Zoinks in that the hole should only be on the left side of the bumper and feed into a volume that is isolated from the engine compartment and feed directly into the airbox. That would allieviate the possible cooling problems and could supply substantial pressure to the intake.
