If the gasket were having to block pressurized oil, I would agree, but I think as long as the rubber is soft and flexible, it will withstand "splashing" oil just fine.

I re-checked my valve clearances last night, since they were so far out of whack at 5K miles, and I just hit 10K miles. I was really surprised that they are all still fine. I wish there was a way to determine the cause of the initial adjustment (bad break in, or bad adjustment from the factory).

My guess is that new engines need to wear in. When you adjusted the valves at 5k miles all of the components had settled and the adjustment maintained itself. Sounds like I'll have to double-check my adjustment now that there's about 10k more miles on the car.

Obviously, you do a good job with the adjustment, so why not undercut the dealer by $75 and charge $100 for your services .

I took my car to the dealership because my engine was valvetrain was loud and they adjusted my valves which were out of factory spec for free. I only have 4500 miles.
