Aftermarket Exhuast
I have a 02 s2000, I installed a 70mm invidia test pipe & a dual 70mm invidia catback. the car had 16,000 miles when i put the exhaust on. It might have popped once or twice over a 15,000 mile period. I now have 30,000 miles and now when the car is cold it pops like a mug (it's loud)when i let off the gas. I've searched and all i came up with is maybe it's a leak in my exhaust somewhere (i.e. a gasket). Which makes sense because i just took my exhaust off the car to clean it. Thats the only thing that has changed. Just wanted to ask and make sure.

You could be running rich, but theres many other things that could cause a poping from your exhaust
Is the poping coming from the exhaust exit?

The other thing I'd check (because I don't know what kind of gaskets that exhaust uses) would be to ensure all the bolts are torqued to spec.
If they use a crush type gasket....it may be good for only that first time, and you may be getting a little leak in there if it's not sealed up tight. Sucking in air when you let off from a small leak will it pop.
What your describing sounds like a lean pop, bikes that have not been retuned with aftermarket exhausts do it a lot. Just a thought.
Hope it helps.....

i have the pop too when i decel...ive had it for over a year and a half tho since i installed it. i didnt worry about it so yea.
from what I understand, it's caused by a very free-flowing exhaust (read: no cat) with very little backpressure causing a very low pressure vacuum. This vacuum pulls extra fuel into the exhaust system on deceleration. The hot exhaust combusts this unburnt fuel.
It's more pronounced while the engine is cold, since the ECU pumps more gas into a cold engine to get everything up to temps.
Either way, I heart this sound
