Default Air Intake

ok, so i'm getting back to the lovely country they call america (its supposed to have steak, nice cars, AND woman!) within a month, and i've already purchased some small things for my baby as she sits in storage.

my question is concerning air intake. i see the muz air intake extension, i see cold air intake systems, and various other air intake systems. how much do all these products really help make your engine perform/last? does anyone have any good dyno proof? i'm especially interested in the air intake extension vs cold air intake systems from brands like K&N. getting more power with little mods seems nice, especially if it may help mpg or even engine life.

thanx for all your help/recommendations!

Thank you sir, glad to see that you are coming home- hopefully for good I am an ex-AEM cold air intake guy, and I saw little benfit other than noise. I prefer my stock intake box with K&N filter. I have a J's Racing front bumper with a DIY guide from the slot in the front bumper. I like it and would recommend just an extension as you had mentioned.

They won't net you much gain at all. I wouldn't expect more than a few HP, all of which would fall under dyno error. Good for sound, not much else. Maybe an uber expensive J's..

I have a k&n fipk, and I like it a lot.. didn't notice any power gain, but it sounds nice. Some people say they get better mpg with it, but mine dropped since it made me want to rev more to hear it.

Intakes generally won't help engine life because the high flow filters generally allow more contaminants into the engine. This is how high performance filters work is by sacrificing filtration...filter companies have to find the optimum point for filtration vs performance. I have the Fipk and I have gotten an avg of 1.5mpg better than stock in the past 3 weeks of city driving. I tried to mimic my usual driving conditions during those three weeks because I wanted to see if it made a difference in mpg....of course it could also be that I just placed a cleaned filter when it was installed

Fipk Summary
Performance: Very noticeable throttle response, and some HP gain.
Sound: Below 6k RPM and partial throttle sounds stock. But WOT and above 6k is awesome, the throaty growl is addicting.
Fuel Economy: In 90% city driving, I've averaged 1.5 mpg better than before in similar conditions. But this could be attributed to the cleaned filter.

Do you really think this 1.5 increase has been accurately measured? Especially in city driving?

^^ Yes I do because as I stated before "I tried to mimic my usual driving conditions during those THREE weeks". I go to the same gas station, and my city mpg has been nearly the same for the three months before that so I can honestly YES. There are two discrepancies I can think of; ambient temp since the weather has gotten warmer (which warmer temps should actually = worst mpg due to warmer intake air and gas being less dense when filling up) AND me switching to a cleaner filter.
