Default air pump

i paid my $89 to check up on my check engine light today, they found in their wonderfull little compjuter program that i need my "air pump" replaced. i need this so i can get the light off and pass my emissions test in Georgia. the cost will be almost $900. I already had to pay almost $900 a ways back to replace the throttle body and sensor.....
i just ain't gunna do it, final, no way in hell these %$%# people are getting my money.

The question.... They said the engine could run forever without the pump, is this so???
can i take it to some little japanese shop for cheaper? i don't know about u but $900 is a lot to pass a freakin emissions test.....

No computer will tell you "the air pump is bad". Maybe one of it circuits. Or in the case of an S2000, a simple hose problem.

I've never heard of an S2000 air pump going bad.

It will not affect the engine without it, only the emmisions.

Best advice....find another shop, get a second opinion. Don't tell them what the first shop told you

Isn't this emissions related? That being the case, the emissions warranty is much longer than the basic factory warranty. It should cost you NOTHING to get this fixed.

A P0410 is for air pump malfunction. There is a 60A fuse that supplies power to the entire pump circuit. It's entirely possible the pump is shorted and blowing the fuse. It's also possible it has another electrical problem.

I've seen them go bad before, usually after the car has been in a front end collision and the pump has been smashed.

The only emmisions controls under a 8yr/80K warranty are the Catalytic convertor, and the PCM. If your standard 3yr/36k is up, it's not under warranty.

i would first reset the light and check to see if it comes back if it does go somewhere like advance and have them pull the code they will do it for free and see if its the same

if it comes back check to make sure the air pump operates

if no check the (60A) fuse if blown fix the short
if not Remove the left-front inner fender. Disconnect air pump electrical current sensor 2P connector.

Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
At the left engine compartment wire harness side, measure voltage between air pump electrical current sensor 2P connector terminal No. 1 and body ground.

see if ther is voltage if there isnt repair wire

also check the relay

the weird thing about what u typed is that if that 60A fuse is blown the air pump wont work so maybe if u replace the fuse it will work hard to say sence i wasnt there doing the testing

I had my air pump replaced. And no I have never been in an accident. :knocksonwood: It took them over a week to diagnose the problem b/c there isn't a specific code for it. The warranty for emissions is something like 80k/7 years... They should cover it. I know mine was covered! And yes the air pump is listed under emissions!!!

Been there done that

Rather than paying to check the code. I pad for mine then they realized it was the air pump and they reimbursed my money back to me. Yeah Honda!

You can go to Auto Zone. They have a reader that spits out the code and the generic definition of what it is right on the screen. Or talk to your local club. I know a few locals near me who have readers

i looked int he warranty manual and the federal emissions warranty is for 36,000 or 3 years on parts, and i'm past that. The only thing they replace for the full life of the vehicle is the seatbelt, muffler, and rust is for five years.

I like a lot of s owners am an engineer and i know how engineers think, and i can't believe honda allows this sort of stuff to go on, i'm going to write a letter. i've never been in a wreck and i don't see how i've abused the pump any.

I'd be interested to know how much money these honda repair shops make compared to car sales, sounds like a scam to me, i think a lawsuit is definitely in order.

OH yeah, on page 16 of the emissions warranty is says that even design and defects warranty ends at 3 years 36,000 miles.

and your right some parts are coverted 8yrs /80,000, those parts are:
warm-up three way catalytic converter
ECM
powertrain CM
trasmission CM
but that's all folks...

THERE ARE OVER 75 other parts that run out after 3/36.

in california air pump is covered though for 7/70......

I was told by Honda that it was covered and it was done for free. This was done well out of my warranty period.
