I bought a used diff a while back. Can I "bench test" it to see if it is good? Do I have to take it apart to really know?

Thanks

Thanks! Based on your description, I think I've got a good one.

Being that it is a spare, should it be stored with oil, or empty?

Another test if it hasn't been drained is to look at the magnetic drain plug. A little bit of slippery grey residue is normal, and comes from break in and wear of the LSD components. The magnet is doing its job trapping this debris. Any large flakes, gritty material or teeth on the magnet is a bad sign.
