Default Alternator Question

Well my car has been out of waranty for a couple of months now and is close to hitting 100k miles, I was checking out some of the cost for replacement parts and saw our alternator costing over 500 dollars. Is there any reason for it costing so much. My 99 accord alternator cost 120 from what I remember(not including install). Can you repair an alternator if it breaks.. Is their an generic manuafactor alternator we can use or does it have to be through honda.

Accord alternators are cheaper because they build far more Accords than S2000's. If Honda offers replacement brushes and other internal parts an alternator can be rebuilt.

The part # given by VAD is for a remanufactured alternator, someone has already rebuilt it. So yeah, it's possible to rebuild them. Will Honda let you try this at home by ordering the necessary parts? Probably not.

As VAD's first post implies, you can buy these at Napa. That's why he gave you the part # from Napa. IIRC Napa is a national chain, go plug your zip code into their store locator and you've got your phone number.
