Default Alternator/rectifier replacement experiences?

My 2006 now has over 90,000 miles. After noticing a few symptoms, I'm rather suspicious that the rectifier is bad or going bad. I've convinced myself it's worth some preventative maintenance before I'm stranded on the side of the road. Majestic has new alternators for $800, remanufactured alternators for $290 and rectifiers for $170.

I'm fully confident in my ability to change out an alternator, but I've never taken one apart before to replace the rectifier, and I can't find a DIY to demonstrate how easy or hard it will be. Is a moderately experienced do-it-yourselfer likely to screw it up? If so, I'd be inclined to get a reman unit unless anyone has had bad experiences with them. In which case, I'd be ponying up for the new one like total patsy and then punching myself in the dick for being a coward. Fingers crossed that the rectifier swap is a breeze.

Learn me.

what is your symptom? if your gauge is flickering than its your rectifier. Its a pretty simple process. Just take your time. I replaced my since I had a slight flickering from time to time, after replacing the rectifier it hasn't done it. knock on wood.

I swear the helms has a right-up on alt dis/ reassembly.

If it were me, I'd be looking for a low mileage used one from a trusted seller on this forum.

Silvermonster, yes, a slight flickering of the dash lights. It only happens about 10-20% of the time, and usually with headlights and AC on in the morning, when the most current is being drawn.

MR T, good suggestion. From browsing a few other related threads, I'll also get in there and clean and tighten all the terminals before I make a purchase.

Rebuilt mine when the dash lights started flickering, replaced the diode pack and brushes. Piece of cake. Yes it is in the shop manual with complete instructions. Pages 4-29 through 4-31

Is the diode pack you're referring to the rectifier itself, or did you specifically replace the diodes themselves on your current rectifier?
If the latter, I would give you 1 million cookies if you could tell me what parts to buy to do this and a brief how-to, as I am currently having this issue!

Yes the diode pack I referred to is what the manual calls the rectifier assembly. You would need part numbers: 31127-PCX-J01 Rectifier assembly
and 31105-PR7-A01 Brush holder assembly. About $217 delivered. Just follow the manual for the instructions. Pretty self explanatory really.
