Default am i heading the right direction?

i saved the thread for my future install... but i have a question and want to know if i'm in the right direction.

that nut in the picture. that nut is mainly to keep the shock piston in place no? for example, not allowing it to separate from the tophat. is it supposed to be torqued after or before the car is on the ground?

I would tighten it enough to keep it on and torque when it is on the car. It's much easier to torque then, than in that awkward position. I would know, I've done it before

I've always done it off the car- that way it's easier to do w/out spinning the piston.
