Default Another left rear post

I am hearing a single pop noise from the left rear when I transition from reverse to first gear. It only occurs when I first back out of the garage in the morning and when I leave the parking lot after work. If I have to come to a complete stop shortly after, I occasionally hear the noise again when I release the clutch in first.

This started a couple of weeks ago. I hven't noticed any changes in performance or handling - it still drives great.

I've seen similar postings while searching but not like I have described here.

Any ideas or advice?

'00 w/23,000 mi.

Mine does the exact same thing. I have a feeling it's just related to the brake pad shifting slightly after having the parking brake set for hours.

That sounds reasonable. I think I'll try just leaving it in gear in the garage without setting the brake to see what happens. My concern is I have a cousin who had a '00 who described a pop coming from the rear end about 2 months before he rolled his. I think he just got into a curve a little too hot and overcorrected but you never know.

It's either the brake pad or more likely, the rear axle nut needs to be re-torqued. I have had both noises and yours sounds like the rear axle nut. It's not going to cause any problems, but it is an annoyance.

Bob

PS...there is an outside chance that this could be caused by a rear axle CV joint, but I would expect to have had other symptoms as well, like vibrations from the rear when accelerating.

Thanks -

boiler - do you mean an annoyance like the rear view mirror rattle?

I think I'll try the parking brake first. If that's not it, do you think this is a dealer service problem? I've got a guy doing maintenance who used to work for a Honda shop but I don't think he's going to be real familiar with the other problems you mentioned - my S2K is the first one he's worked on.

Hmm, mine only makes the noise when I press on the brake after backing up, but the clutch is fully depressed. And it only does it after sitting for a number of hours.

#13,

My car would make a popping noise from the rear after sitting in the garage overnight. It would pop as soon as I engaged the clutch to start backing out of the garage. No more noise after the initial pop. Retorqueing the axle nut did fix this noise.
