Hi all,

I just purchased the OEM front and rear spoilers for my S from Hardtopguy (a.k.a Jeff). He's a super nice guy to deal with and shipped out my stuff lightning fast. The front spoiler is very simple to install. HOWEVER, the rear spoiler requires to drill 4 holes (in which case i only drill 2 at the end of each side, and it holds well). After installing the rear spoiler, the trunk has more weight on it so it won't lift open that much. So I have to replace the original trunk springs with the higher tension ones.

My question is: Anybody have luck replacing them? From the instruction it says we need a special tool. Or I should just leave it that way?

Best Regards,

Gary

If you are going to replace the springs you need the tool. It's so difficult to do without it. When I ordered my oem spoiler I was sure to order the tool, heck it was only 5 bucks. I put the spoiler on first with the stock trunk springs still on just to see what it was like. When I used the keyless trunk feature the trunk barely popped open and the trunk felt a bit heavier when lifted. So I went ahead and installed the upgraded springs and it popped up the same height as before. It's really a convenience feature as your trunk will still be useful either way. I suggest you drill all 4 holes though for security and a flush look. Hope this helps.

BTW you got touch up paint too right?

When I installed my mugen one I replaced the trunk bar "springs". I used a pair of vice grips and clamped on and kinda twisted it. It is really hard to explain, but I made it work....it took me a while to figure out how they go back on cuz my instructions were in japanese

Shouldn't this be in under the trunk?

I bought the tool with the spoiler, and do not see any reason to change the spring. The trunk still opens.

So another tool I will either use once or never use added to my collection

I changed the trunk springs when I added the rear spoiler. I used vice grips and a heavy screw driver and it wasn't too difficult. However, I can see where you could break a couple of fingers if you are not careful. Bottom line: the trunk opened no more than 1/2 inch more with the new springs. I wouldn't bother with them.

Thank you all for the inputs. I decided that I will leave the truck spring as it is now since it still pops open like before but just now as high.

Geez. . . Talk about doing something half ass.

If the spoiler requires 4 bolts (which it does), then do what it calls for. I installed my own OEM spoiler and drilled the 4 holes. The installation, if done correctly is pretty easy.

You already invested the $30k for the car and now $300 (or so) for the spoiler, how can you just do the install half way?

The tool for the springs is relatively cheap but it's kind of useless after your install. I purchased one or my install and I could not have done the springs without the tool.

I now ship the tool to whoever needs it in my general area for free. Get yourself the tool (about $4 or $5) and finish the job right.

I didn't need the tool, just a long ass screwdriver you can get some leverage on
