A while ago... I read some independent test done by a M3 owner from BMW board...
He tested Redline, Mobil 1, Castrol and Amsoil...

Amsoil came up to the top... anyone heard of it?

I haven't heard of Amsoil but I have heard of the other products you mentioned. To help me understand, I'd like to summarize what the recommendations are:

1.) Mobil 1: F1 and Cart
2.) Castrol Syntec: Probably can't go wrong
3.) Royal Purple: Specific auto race teams (I DON'T KNOW IF THERE IS A DISTRIBUTOR IN CANADA)
4.) Amsoil ??? (Never heard of them)
5.) Redline: Probably can't go wrong, but IMO may be a bit more pricey compared to Castrol Syntec

I've narrowed my options down to 1, 2 or 5.

Thanks for your thoughts,

Cheers,

Jim

Schatten Russ - stick with non-synth for your first change. wait until the second or third change to swap to a synth or synth-blend.
Russ, I second this recomendation. Check your owners manual about this item. They do not recommend changing to synthetic oil until later. Also, from many threads here, you really don't have to change the break-in oil until 7500 miles or one year (whichever comes firts). Supposedly, ther are ingredients in the break-in oil that will greatly benefit the engine in the long run.

I don't remember where I got this link from but this is a very informative web page regarding motor oils:

jcheung550, this page may help you make your decision.

I used redline on my '97 Prelude and after i did i got a MAJOR oil consumption problem....i could go through 4 quarts of oil in 800miles. i had new piston rings and head gasket under warrentee but i still had the problem..albiet not as badly.

id stay away from all that mess and stick with Mobile 1.....but thats just mho..

Mobil 1 is what I've always used and I've been very satisfied with it. I think that it is a great synthetic choice.

Recalling a conversation with a bike mechanic friend:
Don't you have to flush the engine when you switch between dino/synthetic oil to mineral or bean oil?

Reference this..... https://www.s2ki.com/forums/showthread.php?...ighlight=amsoil

Amsoil has been around forever and I don't use anything else for my broken-in engines...
