Default Anyone know anything about batteries?

So my mom called me earlier and said she ran into the store and back out to find her car dead. Nothing at all, just dead. We have had issues with her battery connections coming loose before. Tow truck come out and she tells him she thinks a connection is loose. He said "they look fine to me". Then when he goes to jump it he gets to the negative terminal and says "oh this one is loose". My mom asks him to tighten it but he insists on jumping it first. He plugs in the cables to his truck and immediately the battery starts sparking and smoking. My mom said he ran back to unplug and acid was everywhere and the connectors melted to his cables.

Did he screw it up? I assume that it had a weak ground considering the negative was loose?

Wow the only thing I can think of is that he put the positive to the negative and viceversa. Is the battery fuse blown in the car?

He hooked up the cables backwards. Shorted the battery and most likely blew the 100A main fuse, maybe more.

Nothing works after the smoke gets let out.

wow, i've see that happen on a toyota 4runner, except all electrical failed after that. the dealership replaced all the fuses and a new battery and nothing would still work. no windows, no ignition, no lights, anything that was electrical did not work. i forgot what they ended up doing but it was nasty!!!
