Ap1 differential on Ap2

Default Ap1 differential on Ap2

Hey guys,

Just had a quick question regarding a differential swap. Im currently selling a 4.77 geared diff and have a potential buyer with an ap2. I wanted to make sure he has no issues with the swap before he makes the purchase. He currently has his stock ap2 differential.

From what I read in the searches, the bolts used on the ap1 and ap2 differentials are different where the prop shaft connects to the differential. So in this case, what will be needed for this to work on his setup.

Can he just use the output shaft from his ap2 differential and install it on his ap1 4.77 geared diff.

Yes, just swap the flanges.

Yes he can, the AP1 uses 8 mm socket head screws and the AP2 uses 10 mm socket head screws.

The pinion seal/flange replacment can be done but if you are not 100% on the money with resetting the two torque settings on the pinion you can screw things up.

The torque setting on the nut is 94 foot pounds but, to do things right you should be sure that the turning torque is between 7 and 12 inch pounds on the flange. The only true way to know if it is, is to remove the ring gear and LSD, then check with only the pinion in place.

You can do it by feel but, this requires a little experience. You would replace the seal then reset the pinion to 75 foot pounds, then turn it by hand a few times, then set to 94 foot pounds, then feel how much resistance it takes to turn the flange. It should be a little stiff then brake free to spin. To stiff your screwed you will have to brake down the rear and replace the crush sleeve. To loose and you will wrench down more on the nut till it feels right.

Ok just to clarify things, the only difference with the pieces are the right and left output flanges, the one which connect to the right and left axel which lead to the wheels.

or is it the shaft which connects the diff to the tranny with those hex keys.

its the flange that attaches to the driveshaft, not the left and right axles going to the wheels!

so basically, the flanges dont line up due to the size difference in hex bolts. I thought there might be a way around it since it would be changing to a smaller bolt than a larger one, but if that is needed, Ill be sure to advise him so he's aware.

There is a way to do it without changing anything You can tap the holes to fit the 10 mm screw.
You would drill out the holes then tap..............just change the flange you can do it
