I have original retainers on my Ap1, 115k miles.

I am trying to crack them by running to 9k a lot. So far it hasn't worked

I inspect them once a year due to the dragon and as of 2 weeks ago all is good. I will leave them forever to prove they can take 9k.

I wish I lived near you Billman. I'd go to you for all my S2000 needs.

I had mine replaced at 130K. I didn't over-rev the motor, but I had no idea how the 3 previous owners drove the car. And from all the horror stories I have been reading on here of permanent engine failure from a dropped valve, I wanted them changed ASAP.

Found out all of them were good with no cracks or stress marks, which tells me this car wasn't abused, or at least not over-revved.

Here's another...click on the picture to enlarge it for the best view. If you are looking intently, you can see the crack on the bottom of the right retainer. Look for the break in the lighting.

good on the left.....................................broken on the right

I think it should be just checked but if you haven't over-reved, shouldnt be replaced. Replaced mine at 148k miles, with 10k boosted and all my retainers were fine.
