If at all possible, get a NEW transmission. I rebuilt the transmission in my CRX a long time ago, and re-used some of the things that weren't worn out, but they are now worn out. If I had replaced everything (meaning all the bearings, synchros, shafts, etc.) then it would probably be at 99% right now, but I cheaped-out and now I regret it. 2nd and 3rd gear synchros are worn out and grind above 4500 rpm shifts, unless I take my time (and I mean be very gentle). If I were you and I had the money, I'd go with either a brand new one or I'd get all the synchros and sleeves replaced, as well as all the bearings, and any gears that were worn even slightly more than usual. Don't forget to replace the clutch disk, pressure plate, and have the flywheel resurfaced while they have the transmission out. That I hear can be over $1000 on its own.

Definitely recommend trying to get a new one. Check the local subforum to see if anyone has one they are selling.

2 THREADZ!

I would expect a tranny rebuild to be just fine, unless some extreme damage was done, which may be the case for $4000. Rebuild would typically work well as long as the mechanic is doing a proper and thorough job. But typically might as well rebuild all key components as mentioned above, clutch, pressure plate, flywheel. Which can run up cost quickly. And by proper/thorough I mean down the details such as greasing the proper components (e.g. rusted input spline, throwout bearing).

So if possible, research a mechanic at your location's subforum (here on s2ki) that would be competent with S2000s, then weigh the cost for an all new transmission as people have stated. New tranny may end up being cheaper.

That's dirt cheap for an s2k. Salvaged s2ks are going for about that or a little more at auction STILL crashed. My buddy got his 02 bb with all red interior with 80k miles in great condition for 6k. Idk how you guys fund those deals, I want a spare s2k lol
