I got a shop they quote a rebuild one will go for 1000-1500. they said 1200 should do the job. please please give me some advice.
thanks guys
I would source out a good used transmission, an ap2 tranny is an upgrade from the ap1 but it is up to you. You can find a used ap2 tranny for $700-1000 just have to be patient and smart.

I picked up a used ap1 for dirt cheap and plan to put it in my car and rebuild the one that is currently in there on my own.

4k for an s2000 is crazy, lucky you.

If I had replaced everything (meaning all the bearings, synchros, shafts, etc.) then it would probably be at 99% right now, but I cheaped-out and now I regret it. 2nd and 3rd gear synchros are worn out and grind above 4500 rpm shifts, unless I take my time (and I mean be very gentle). If I were you and I had the money, I'd go with either a brand new one or I'd get all the synchros and sleeves replaced, as well as all the bearings, and any gears that were worn even slightly more than usual. Don't forget to replace the clutch disk, pressure plate, and have the flywheel resurfaced while they have the transmission out. That I hear can be over $1000 on its own.
The guy is a friend of my friend's dad. My friend's dad own a shop. The 1200 quote is for new clutch too. Well, se said he will wash out stuff and replace all the bad stuff with Honda's oem parts. With 1 year warranty. If I were to buy a used one, how much is the labor cost to remove and replace the tranny?
Thanks so much for the advice.

This one needs a new tranny and body to be repaint...it's a ap1 but the old owner think its cool to do a ap2 after market bumpers. Everything are in tight, it just need a good paint job. Also, the top is tape the crap out (still works). So around 3000 is the quote for rebuild tranny and a fresh paint job at the shop. Then I'll be driving it lol

My trans rebuild price is less than half that.

While you wait.

Tell them to do better.

buy a used ap2 trans for 700-900 and install that with a new clutch kit

i would not trust any shop to rebuild the trans

Yeah actually this does sound better.

Than this:

Buying a used transmission is a good option if you can trust the condition of the used transmission is good. I wanted to have a "like new" transmission that I KNEW was in excellent condition because all parts were new and installed properly for less than buying a new one. It is also an option to rebuild it yourself like I did in the above referenced post, and enjoy a like new transmission with zero issues. I didn't trust any shops to do it right either therefore I attempted (and succeeded) to do it myself. Or you could take it to Billman if you are close enough to him (which I recommend) I am not, I live in Florida...
