Default AP2 taillight conversion issue - what am I looking at??

Hi all,

Purchased my first S2K couple months back, it's high mileage but treating me fantastic so far. I've done a couple minor fixes, my last item on the to-do list is figure out why my rear turn signals aren't working.

Car is a 2002, almost completely stock except for an AP2 facelift front/rear. The AP2 headlights are working perfectly (after I replaced a $130 dollar HID bulb - ouch), the taillights work great - that is, the reverse lights & the brake lights, the turn signals don't do a damn thing.

Finally tear into it today, pick up 2 replacement blinker bulbs because they're cheap and why not try that first - I am greeted by this conundrum. First and foremost I can't even see a way to pull the panel off to access the bulb itself. I'm also now figuring the issue is more complicated than just a blown bulb, especially considering both of them don't work. Has anyone seen this conversion before, or knows what the heck is going on? Rear panel does not appear to have been cut/modified at all, something I thought was required based on the other threads I've been reading.

Thanks in advance all.

You have a tail light conversion, damn. Need to check for proper voltage on the harness when each mode is selected(running lights, brake lights, signal, reverse) and go from there. Good luck.

Do the hazards work? Front? Rear? Neither?

I bought a set of Buddy club tail lights and the turn signals didn't work. Everything else did. According to their instructions, you have to make sure the black harness wire from the stock socket goes to the black wire on the tail lights. I was doing just that but nothing. Went on for about 2 hours checking stuff. Then, I was like, screw it. I'm tired this that, I'm gonna transpose the wires and they worked.(shrug) Not saying this is your issue but who knows. ( I did this with a jumper wires with 1amp fuse, though).

Dogsbody, you have the knock-off generic ap2-style tail lights made to fit the ap1's. This is a great option for those who do not wish to cut metal to get genuine ap2 tails into their ap1's. I know because I have them too on my ap1. The issue with these tails is that the first batch of them had the polarity reversed for the turn signals. Since all the lights in the rear tail lights of these ap2-style tails are LED's built in, there is no LED bulb to switch out. So, you will just have to cut off the turn signal wires and re-wire them opposite.

Where might one find these knock off AP2 tailights?

Thanks! The issue was only limited to the initial batches, correct? As in, if I buy a set today, I should be fine?

They can be found here, AP2-style tails for AP1. Just to make sure, you might want to contact the seller directly and confirm the turn signal polarity. If you can find it cheaper on eBay, by all means get it from there.
