AP2 Transmission
Hello everyone. I need information on swapping in an AP2 transmission in my AP1. I'm losing my synchro shifting from 2nd to 3rd, and it's going to need replaced soon. I'm gonna buy a used tranny as opposed to a new gear set and synchro, and I'm thinking it may be advantageous to use an AP2 trans as opposed to a direct replacement. I test drove an 07' recently, and noticed the shorter gears mentioned. I think it would be a little better with the 1K higher redline, which will lengthen each gear slightly, making the disparity between the two smaller. I also understand that it has carbon synchros as opposed to brass, which should theoretically be more durable and last longer.
What has to be changed to do the swap? And what do you guys think? Beneficial to do an AP2?
I can't believe replacements used are so cheap!! $500 shipped to my door, less than 70K miles. And I'm not talking about just one cheap used replacement, all of them have been between $300 and $900. This can't be the same Aisin unit that is in my Mazdaspeed MX-5, because it would cost between $1,200 and $2,500 to buy a used replacement for it. I know they're similar, but the core is not the same, as some people have tried to tell me, and from what little bit I've read up on it. And, unlike the S2K tranny that so many have issues with, my MSM's tranny has never skipped a beat in the 100K miles it's been used, hard. Almost every day, as it used to be my DD.
Until I bought the S....

Harry you are right. Slight modification. You need to take the output shaft adapter and swap it with the AP1's as it's different. That's all. It's pretty simple from what I hear.
Where are you getting an AP2 trans that cheap? I looked for a couple months to find a low mile AP1 for $600 about 2 years ago. All the AP2s I could find were closer to 1k. I can hear the bearings start to go again on this one and I was planning to replace them, but if I can get an AP2 for that kind of money then thats the ticket.
