Default Ap1 vs AP2 tranny

im posting this here because i dont know where else to post it..dont jump on my ass if its in the wrong place..

I have heard of a few people with AP1 tranny's and swapping to an AP2 tranny? Is there any gain involved?

The actual gear ratios are findable with some research.
Gear ratios 1 thru 4 are the same, with ap2 5th and 6th taller. BUT the ap2 tranny has a shorter "secondary" ratio, which acts on all gears like a final drive. So the overall effect is that the ap2 tranny has roughly 4% shorter 1 thru 4 gears, and a slightly longer 6th gear.

There may be a gain accelerating from zero, but for road course/autoX usage, it's going to depend on the specific course whether the AP1 or AP2 ratios are "better". Personally, I'd rather have the AP1's closer 4-5 ratios than lower (numerically higher) gearing in 1-4. But, long/short, I wouldn't bother with the cost/time/effort required for a swap either way unless I needed another transmission anyway.

AP2 tranny has carbon lined synchro's replacing the solid brass ones in the AP1.

I know the cases look a bit different, but not sure what that is a result of.

Edit: wouldn't bother changing for change's sake, but if I needed a new transmission for an AP1 S I would definitely go for the AP2 trans

AP2 gearing is more aggressive, gives you more mechanical advantage - you can buy aggressive gears for an AP1 easily enough, but they have more lash and whine than AP2.

I have some problems downshifting into 2nd and quickshifting into 3rd (it grinds a little but only quickshifting into 3rd)..its very difficult to downshift into 2nd..i find myself having to force it in, only when i need to though..i was planning on getting some Syncro-mesh to see if that does the trick..what do you guys think?

I swapped out my ap1 box for a brand new ap2 box several years ago . Honestly there is very little difference between the two as far as gearing goes . As for strength they are about the same . The ap2 box is slightly more forgiving as far as grinding gears go and thats about it . If you have a good shifting ap1 box dont even waste youre time or money doing this so called upgrade !

Notchy third gear shifts are usually due to cold transmission fluid. It takes longer to warm up than the engine.
